[Lady Thoughts] “All the ugly girls, why the hell is y’all clapping?”

Ugly Duckling

Bad Chick?

Bad Chick

I’ve been thinking about this a lot: do ugly people know they’re ugly? While your automatic answer will likely be, “well of course they know, they have mirrors don’t they?” let’s just hold up and think about this for a second.

Do you have that one friend with a face that looks like it’s had a couple of love taps with a shovel but still thinks that they’re the baddest bitch in the room? Or that one chick whose confidence does not match their unfortunately asymmetrical face?  How about the chick who swears she’s a dime but is really a couple pennies shy of a nickel?

When I say ugly, I’m not talking about something that a different hair style, a little makeup and a change of bifocals is going to fix and turn Ugly Betty into America Ferrera, I’m talking about the kind of ugly that only paper bags and darkness can remedy. I realise that beauty is subjective and someone’s personality can in fact make them more attractive and so can that person standing next to their uglier friend but while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ugly is still ugly.  Evolutionarily, there are standards of beauty that cross cultural, ethnic and racial lines and are in fact universal.

So, if we all come wired to appreciate a certain standard of beauty why do busted chicks think they can out-fox Naomi Campbell? Personally, I blame people who are too afraid to tell ugly girls the truth. I’m not saying come out and tell them that whenever you look at them you’re reminded of a constipated wildebeest but stop filling their head with untruthful compliments (“girl, you are so gorgeous”), sometimes silence really is the best answer.

The other culprit? Thirsty dudes. Guys, who will try it on with anything in a skirt no matter how obese, unsightly or buttafaced are not helping females have a real idea of how they look.  I know unsightly chicks need love too, but why not focus on the real things that are there, like their inner beauty?
The last thing that I want to do is to strip these girls of their confidence and self-worth (which really shouldn’t be attached to their attractiveness in the first place) but it’s embarrassing when a girl talks non-stop about being a 10 when in fact they’re barely approaching a 5.
I think I have a pretty fair idea of how I look, do you?

Side Note: I chose to focus on women in this post because there’s more societal importance placed on their attractiveness.
