Yesterday, I was having a chat with someone about gay clubs which turned into a conversation about how school, higher education in particular, is pointless. Now how we got from clubs in Soho to me wasting the last four years of my life I will never know but needless to say, I was dumbfounded, offended and determined to preach all the merits of a university education. With a four year degree I have access to an entire new calibre of jobs that I otherwise wouldn’t have; I have a deep and profound understanding of whatever subject I chose to study (in this case psychology); and it helps me understand so many different perspectives from the diverse array of people in that same university. I was just about to hit him with how university helps you to “find yourself”, when he interrupted and asked: “how does a university education prepare you for when one of those satellites up there fails and you’re left without a computer, television or a phone?”
I looked at him in silence for a minute and the first thought in my head was, “well, how long will it take them to fix the satellite?” Never mind who “them” is or why my university education didn’t teach me how to fix that satellite my gotdamn self.
