[Lady Thoughts] “I Can’t Lie But You THICK”

10 Jun

Anybody who has listened to a hip hop song sometime in the last decade knows that the ideal woman is some variation of a, “long-haired, thick, red-bone”.  Now, I realise that this doesn’t apply to the entire Y chromosome carrying population out there but I cannot count the amount of times I’ve seen a dude (more often than not a black one) almost break his neck at the sight of a girl with a fatty.  Ignoring the long-haired, red-bone parts of the equation can we please focus on what in the name of all things Idris Elba a “thick” woman is?  When we say a chick is “thick” are we talking about someone with proportions like Nicki Minaj or are we thinking a biscuit with the lady lumps of Ices Brown?

Toccara Jones

First, let’s put this ultimately meaningless pondering into context.  I’ve recently dropped 7-8-maybe 9 pounds and my clothing size has retreated back into the single digits.  Although I feel so much better and lighter, along with my weight I’ve managed to lose my boobies, what little bit of ass that I had and all things that would have made me somewhat “thick”.  While I am now decidedly less thick than I was a couple of months ago I seem to be getting a lot more attention from guys, even the ones who profess to want a chick with a Kim Kardashian.

I’m confused.

Was I too thick before or am I now (with smaller boobies and a white girl ass) thick enough?

Queen Bey

A good friend and I were recently discussing what it is to be thick and how it seems to have developed various meanings across different segments of the population.  Most men seem to define a thick woman as one who has curves similar to Queen Bey (who is actually rather slim) and has Barbie doll proportions.  Women on the other hand appear to define thickness as having a whooooole lotta everything (see Ices Brown link).  Again, I know this is a generalisation, but you know that you’ve all heard that one borderline obese chick that refuses to lose weight because, “it’s okay, men like ‘em thick.”  Is there a distinction between thick and fat?  Do men really prefer Queen Latifah over Chanel Iman?  When is thick too thick?

Discuss.
