J.Cole. We’ve all heard his name mentioned in the recent past, usually attached to predictions of impending fame and awesomeness and that’s largely because he keeps coming out with stuff like this. Here’s a link to listen and download Roc Nation’s first signee newest single, “Premeditated Murder“
[Music] Friday Mixtape
19 JulFriday mixtape is a site with a very well defined purpose, to create a new mixtape every Friday (in case you didn’t get that). The owners have been traveling for a while and it’s been months since the last mixtape, but last week I got to do a guest spot and assist with mixtape number 62. Check out my compilation here: http://fridaymixtape.com/mixtape-062/
[Music] Covers
16 JulIt is currently 4:31am GMT and I cannot sleep so I’m blogging, so please excuse this if it makes less sense than usual.
I have a secret love affair with song covers. I love acoustic strip downs of songs or just complete re-workings by artists with voices different than the original singer. Here are a few of my favourites from the past few years:
Mike Posner- “I Don’t Trust Myself” cover of John Mayer
I don’t know if this is better than the original because John Mayer is pretty freaking amazing, but Posner definitely deserves snaps for effort
Florence and the Machine – “Hospital Beds” cover of Cold War Kids
I love Florence and the Machine like I love gooey triple fudge brownies and this cover of Hospital Beds is so completely righteous that it makes my soul hurt
Katy Perry- “Electric Feel” cover of MGMT
I am usually so focused on how ridiculous Katy Perry’s songs about pseudo-lesbian experiences and melting boys popsicles are that I tend to forget that the girl can actually sing. Here she is showcasing her pipes on MGMT’s breakout hit Electric Feel
Pixie Lott- “Use Somebody” cover of Kings of Leon
Kings of Leon are undoubtedly my favourite band ever, and while I’m happy for all of their recent success there was a period last year when I couldn’t hear “Use Somebody” without wanting to stab somebody in the eye. There were a lot of covers floating around of the song, because it really is that awesome and this is one of my faves:
Frankmusik – “Rehab” cover of Amy Winehouse
He stomps on this track
Mark Ronson feat Daniel Merriweather- “Stop Me Medley: Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” cover of The Smiths
This is the song that introduced me to Mr. Merriweather and I’ll forever be grateful.
[Music] FKi
16 JulHere’s a track named “Red Cup” from FKi. The university student in me made me post it. Take a listen below and if you like it download it for free here.
[Music] Kid Cudi, Best Coast and Rostam Batmanglij
16 JulEvery year converse releases a new track around summertime featuring a conglomeration of awesome artists whose awesomeness is barely contained in the one song. Last year it was Pharrell, Santigold and Julian Cassabalancas on the dope as hell “My Drive Thru“. This year we have Kid Cudi, Best Coast & Rostam Batmanglij on “All Summer” which can be downloaded on the converse website. As the name would suggest it’s a song about summer and all of its joys. The video features creepy paper mache heads and throwing up glitter…because what else do you think of when you think of summer? Anyway take a look below:
[Pretty] The Old Spice Guy
15 JulIn terms of awesomeness, there are very few people that can touch the Old Spice Guy, Isaiah Mustafa, although I’m sure many want to. I know I do. He has taken a few hours out of his life to spread his melodious, manly man voice over the internets and answer his fan mail via youtube. Here are a few of my favourites:
There are like a hundred more. You can see them all on his youtube page.
[Music] Big Sean
13 JulThe fuck you doin’? Bullshittin’!
Brand new Big Sean video for “What U Doin’? (Bullshittin’)”.
[Movies] Twilight Saga: Eclipse
13 Jul
"because the protagonists spend most of their time staring ominously into the distance or wistfully at each other"
I went to see the Twilight Saga: Eclipse last week. I’ll pause there and let you digest that.
Before going, I had every intention of posting a review immediately afterwards but clearly I didn’t. Maybe it’s because I was so traumatised that I blocked out the experience or because the movie was so boring and forgettable that I simply didn’t remember to post but more likely it’s some combination of the two. Anyway, I went to see Edward, Bella and Jacob stare at each other dramatically and generally be awkward for some 2 odd hours and the giggling gaggle of pre-adolescents behind me did nothing to help this God awful and boring movie.
I have indeed seen the previous two Twilight films and while they too did suck mouldy lemons, at least they were funny. Not intentionally, mind you, but the general lack of acting talent (Taylor Lautner, I’m looking at you); ridiculous dialogue; glittering vampires; and horrible make-up and wardrobe displayed in the first two movies were so funny that I could at least enjoy cackling like an old hag for their duration. Eclipse is actually a better movie than its two predecessors, and I say that with utter disdain because the overall badness of those two films coupled with how seriously they take themselves is the only legitimate reason to watch this complete asshat of a franchise.
In Eclipse, while the acting or dialogue isn’t any better they have finally replaced Nikki Reed’s wig; taken Kellan Lutz out of that velour tracksuit and they kept the vampire sparkling to a minimum (much to my dismay), as they were the three best (read: worst) things about the series. Also, as nothing actually happens in Eclipse there’s very little content there for me to point and laugh at. Sure, there’s a vampire battle but what should have been the climax of the movie lasted all of an unsatisfying two minutes, and nobody likes a quick climax.
And yes Taylor Lautner’s abs are usually on display during his screen time but as the kid’s like 10 years old, it really didn’t do much for me. Also there weren’t any real gems of ridiculous dialogue like in the first two movies, (“Hold on tight, spider monkey!”) because the protagonists spend most of their time staring ominously into the distance or wistfully at each other. In summary, it’s two of the most boring hours of cinema I’ve seen in the recent past.
I hear that Summit Entertainment is trying to milk this cash cow for all it’s worth and break up the last book into two movies similar to what’s being done with Harry Potter (at least shit happens in Harry Potter). So it looks like we have a couple more years of putting up with Twi-Hards and their determination to kill the art of cinema with sparkling vampires and bad wigs. Hurrah.
